The North Carolina Republican Party will hold its state convention in this weekend in June 2023, where delegates will elect a new chairman to lead the party for the next two years. The chairman is responsible for overseeing the party’s fundraising, outreach, messaging, and strategy, as well as working with candidates and elected officials at all levels of government.

The current chairman, Michael Whatley, was elected in 2019 and has led the party through a challenging but successful period. Under his leadership, the party maintained its majority in both chambers of the state legislature, gained four seats in the U.S. House of Representatives, and helped former President Donald Trump win the state by a narrow margin in 2020.

However, some party activists and insiders have expressed dissatisfaction with Whatley’s performance, citing his lack of communication, transparency, and accountability. They also accuse him of being too moderate and compromising with Democrats on issues such as redistricting and voter ID and election integrity. Some of these critics have formed a grassroots movement to back a newcomer to challenge Whatley and his allies in the upcoming elections, John Kane.

The race for chairman is expected to be competitive and contentious, as it will reflect the broader divisions within the party between the establishment and the grassroots, as well as between moderates and conservatives. The outcome will also have implications for the 2024 presidential election, as North Carolina is a crucial swing state that could determine the winner of the Electoral College.

As a registered Republican in North Carolina, you have a say in who will lead your party for the next two years. To participate in the election process, you need to do the following:

  • Attend your state convention in June 2023 and vote for your preferred candidate for chairman if you are a delegate.
